This is My commandment, that you love one another, just as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends. John 15:12-13

What Is Marriage?

  • Part 1 – Answer of Origin
    • Marriage is a reflection of the nature of God that reveals His inherent social an Divine Order and is realized in His creation as the Bridegroom in covenant relationship with His bride.
    • Today there are two competing views:
    • The conjugal view
      • Marriage is the union of a man and a woman who make a permanent and exclusive commitment to each other of the type that is naturally (inherently) fulfilled by bearing and rearing children together.
    • The revisionist view
      • Marriage is the union of two people (whether of the same sex or of opposite sexes) who commit to romantically loving and caring for each other and to sharing the burdens and benefits of domestic life as a union of hearts and minds, enhanced by whatever forms of sexual intimacy both partners find agreeable.
  • Part 2 – Answer of Definition
    • Marriage is One Man + One Woman = One Flesh for One Life
    • Practically walked out in God's created Divine Order
    • Relationally walked out by recognizing male and female differences that are reflected in their functions as a design of creation.
  • Part 3 – Answer of Reality
    • God's design for marriage is not built on love but on a promise made in love.
    • Covenant love!
    • Humanity was designed and created for God's pleasure, for God's purpose.

Ephesians 5:33

  • "Nevertheless, each individual among you also is to love his own wife even as himself, and the wife must see to it that she respects her husband."
    • Your wife deserves a love "to die for"
    • Your husband needs your respect to live and succeed.
    • This is the love she most desires; the respect he desperately needs.
