Jesus’ Appearances on Resurrection Day!

  • I Corinthians 15:5-8
  • Four historical facts:
    • First, Christ was tried by His enemies, convicted, and crucified to death.
    • Second, shortly after His burial, Christ’s tomb was found empty
    • Third, many of the disciples, and also some skeptics, claimed to have seen Christ alive in the flesh, and interacted with Him following His death.
    • Fourth, inspired by the belief in Christ’s bodily resurrection, the disciples initiated a movement that, despite persecutions and martyrdom, converted millions of people to a new way of life based on Christ’s example and His teachings.

Alternative theories:

  • Most popular; the resurrection is a myth, made up by the disciples
  • A second theory is that the disciples stole the body
  • A third theory is that Christ didn’t really die, but He just swooned and revived in the tomb
  • Finally, the hypothesis of the hallucinating disciples

God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds; who being the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power, when He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high Hebrews 1:1-3

What Is Eternal Life?

  • Jesus brought clarity about the definition of eternal life and provided the means to obtain it.
  • John 17:3 “And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.”

The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, Because He has anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed; to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord. Luke 4:18-19

So Jesus said to them again, “Peace to you! As the Father has sent Me, I also send you.” And when He had said this, He breathed on them, and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained. John 20:21-23

Our task, as image bearing, God-loving, Christ-shape, Spirit-filled Christians, following Christ and shaping our world, is to announce redemption to a world that has discovered its fallenness, to announce healing to a world that has discovered its brokenness, to proclaim love and trust to the world that knows only exploitation, fear and suspicion. --- N.T. Wright

Life After Death

  • I Corinthians 15: 51-58
  • Human weakness (flesh and blood) cannot take part in (inherit) the kingdom of God
  • God’s people—living and dead—will be transformed and their bodies will share in immortality.
  • Titus 2:11-14

Therefore let us seek the full assurance of faith and hope, that in the midst of pain, and in the prospect of death, we may think calmly on the horrors of the tomb; assured that our bodies will there sleep, and in the mean time our souls will be present with the Redeemer. --- Matthew Henry

In a Moment of Time

  • There are three different Greek words so translated, each used one time only in the Bible.
  • Each of these three "moments" is used in a context which is anticipates the future.
  • Luke 4:5 “Then the devil, taking Him up on a high mountain, showed Him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time.”
    • Here the Greek word for "moment" is stigme, meaning a "point," like a period after a sentence.
  • I Corinthians 15:51-52 – At that great day, "we shall all be changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye"
    • In this passage, the Greek word for "moment" is a unique word, atomos
  • II Corinthians 4:17 – Nevertheless, we are assured that "our light affliction, which is but for a moment, works for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory"
    • The word here is parautika, referring specifically to the present moment.

But now they desire a better, that is, a heavenly country. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for He has prepared a city for them. Hebrews 11:16
