The Passion of the Psalmist
Psalm 13 - A Psalm of Lament
Praying In Silence Restore the passion!

A Psalm of Lament

  • “How Long” – four times repeated in the two first verses
  • Reveals great dejection and extreme earnestness of soul.
  • The lurking danger:
    • Those who have long been without joy, begin to be without hope.
  • We should never allow ourselves to make any complaints but what drive us to our knees.
  • “Prayer is not designed to inform God, but to give man a sight of his misery; to humble his heart, to excite his desire, to inflame his faith, to animate his hope, to raise his soul from earth to heaven." --- Adam Clark

    • “the just shall live by faith!”

The Resolution

  • Your Faith and Belief System
    • People live up to, or down to their beliefs.
    • Beliefs control our actions – human behavior is belief driven
    • All beliefs carry with them consequences
    • There is a huge difference between an idea and a belief
    • Your true beliefs are exposed by your actions.
  • There is a large “GAP” between what we KNOW & what we DO!
    • Change is not a matter of ability but of motivation, of leverage.
    • Change in habits based on doctor’s report or a child’s concern.
    • Leverage comes from a realization of extreme pain or extreme pleasure.
    • Changing our “should” to “must”
  • Our belief systems keep us from engaging our wills to make the changes necessary.
  • Disobedience and unbelief kept the Exodus generation out of the promised land!

Three Key Verses ~ Keys to Success

  • Hebrews 11:6
    • “But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.”
  • Psalm 92:13

How long, Oh, Lord? - Oh, God #2
Psalm 13

Listen to clip of song "Psalm 13 (How Long)" by Brian Doerksen

I am more hungry for Your bread than natural bread!

  • Man shall not live by bread alone but every word that proceeds from the mouth of God. Matthew 4:4
  • For He satisfies the longing soul, And fills the hungry soul with goodness. Psalm 107:9

“Now, therefore,” says the Lord, “Turn to Me with all your heart, With fasting, with weeping, and with mourning.”
So rend your heart, and not your garments; Return to the Lord your God, For He is gracious and merciful, Slow to anger, and of great kindness; And He relents from doing harm.
Who knows if He will turn and relent, And leave a blessing behind Him –
A grain offering and a drink offering for the Lord your God?
Blow the trumpet in Zion, Consecrate a fast, Call a sacred assembly” Joel 2:12-15

Pressing In – Pushing Through
“Oh, God”

“O God, You are my God; Early will I seek You; My soul thirsts for You; My flesh longs for You In a dry and thirsty land where there is no water.” Psalm 63:1

Returning To Your First Love

In the beginning the church was a fellowship of men and women centering on the living Christ. Then the church moved to Greece where it became a philosophy. Then it moved to Rome where it became an institution. Next, it moved to Europe where it became a culture. And, finally, it moved to America where it became an enterprise.
