No Condemnation
No Separation

Our task, as image bearing, God-loving, Christ-shape, Spirit-filled Christians, following Christ and shaping our world, is to announce redemption to a world that has discovered its fallenness, to announce healing to a world that has discovered its brokenness, to proclaim love and trust to the world that knows only exploitation, fear and suspicion. --- N.T. Wright

Human things must be known to be loved: but divine things must be loved to be known.

The Promise of the Father
Behold, I send the Promise of My Father upon you; but are to stay in the city of Jerusalem until you are endued with power from on high. Luke 24:49
Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you. John 16:7

The Nature of the Holy Spirit

  • A mysterious power?
    • "How can I get more of the Holy Spirit?"
  • A person
    • "How can the Holy Spirit have more of me?"
  • He cannot be bought, but He can be sought!

Two lines of scriptural revelation:

  1. That which insists on the unity of the Godhead.
    Deuteronomy 6:4; I Corinthians 8:4b
  2. Than which reveals the distinctions of the Godhead.
    Genesis 1:26a; II Corinthians 13:14; Matthew 3:16; Matthew 28:18ff

The Person of the Holy Spirit

  • John 15:26 "But when the Helper comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify of Me."
  • John 16:7-8, 13-14 "Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you. "And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:"
"However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come. "He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you"
  • Romans 8:26-27 "Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. Now He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God."
  • I Corinthians 2:10-11 "But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God. For what man knows the things of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so no one knows the things of God except the Spirit of God."
  • Galatians 4:6 "And because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying out, "Abba, Father!""
  • Revelation 2:7 "He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To him who overcomes I will give to eat from the tree of life, which is in the midst of the Paradise of God."

Three Keys

  1. The Holy Spirit is the Person and the power by which assistance and ability are given for serving, for sharing the life and power of God's kingdom with others.
  2. The Holy Spirit's power must be received; His power is not an automatic experience.
  3. When the Holy Spirit fills you, you will know it!
