Podcasting...
is the method of distributing multimedia files, such as audio or video programs, over the Internet using a syndication format for playback on mobile devices (iPod is currently the most popular) and personal computers. The term podcast like 'radio', can mean both the content and the method of delivery. The host or author of a podcast is often called a podcaster. The Podcasters' web site (like on this site) may also offer direct download or streaming of their files; a podcast however is distinguished by its ability to be downloaded automatically using software (podcatcher) capable of reading the syndication format.
A podcatcher is a computer program used to automatically download podcasts. These programs can either reside on your computer (desktop podcatchers) or the Internet (web-based podcatchers). The podcatcher then aggrigates all the syndicated programs which you have subscribed and automatically downloads new programs when they become available. These programs can also play the file on your computer as well as transfer received files to a portable media player.
